Charles Jones Named Director of N.C. Coastal Management
RALEIGH Charles S. Jones, who has served as acting director of the Division of Coastal Management since late 2003, has been named the agencys new director.
Jones will oversee the division responsible for carrying out the Coastal Area Management Act and the states Dredge and Fill Law. He replaces Donna Moffitt, who has become the director of the N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher.
Jones was formerly assistant director for permits and enforcement for the division. He has worked for the agency since 1978.
A Beaufort native, Jones is a graduate of East Carolina University with a bachelors degree in geography/planning. He and his wife, Janie, who is director of the Carteret County Civic Center, live near Smyrna in Carteret County.
Coastal Management regulates development in 20 coastal counties, helps local governments establish accessways for the public to reach coastal waters and administers the Coastal Reserve Program, which sets aside coastal lands for research and education.
