Sources for Lesson Plans

Would you like to expand upon NC Coastal Explorers to build a more complete curriculum for your class?  There are numerous sources for classroom and outdoor activities relevant to the Lower Cape Fear River Basin Module.  Some of these lesson plans are freely available online and others require teachers to attend a training workshop.  Relevant lesson plans from all sources have been listed below under the corresponding lesson from the Lower Cape Fear River Basin module.  Links are provided for those lesson plans that are available online.

  • SEAs K-12 Lesson Plans -

  • DiscoverySchool.com - A wide variety of free lesson plans provided by the Discovery Channel

  • The Water Sourcebook - A curriculum guide by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Water that contains a lot of lessons related to watersheds and coastal ecosystems.

  • Center for Innovation in Engineering and Science Education (CIESE) - This site allows you to collaborate on science projects with other classrooms around the world.

  • North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve Program (NC NERR) - Activities to perform with your class before and after a filed trip visit to one of the NC National Estuarine Research Reserves (such as Bald Head Woods and Zeke's Island in the Lower Cape Fear River Basin).

  • Striper Tracker - Activities related to tracking fish migration and locating essential fish habitat in estuaries.  Developed by the Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) and Rudgers University Marine Field Station.

  • Respect the Beach - A coastal education program developed by the Surfrider Foundation with intensive curriculums related to coastal watersheds and beaches.

  • Coastal Connections - A coastal education curriculum developed by the NC Coastal Federation.  These lessons incorporate the NC Department of Public Instruction Standard Course of Study Objectives for Middle School Education.
