Correlation to State and National Standards

The NC Coastal Explorers education program was designed in accordance with the NC Department of Public Instruction Standard Course of Study Objectives for Middle School Education.  The lessons were written to be understood at a middle-school reading level and the mapping activities were designed for middle school students working independently or with the assistance of a teacher or parent.  However, the materials presented in the lessons are also applicable to both younger and older learners.  For grades 4 and 5, teachers could use information provided by the NC Coastal Explorers modules for class presentations and/or perform some of the map exercises as guided, whole-class activities.  Every page in the Coastal Explorers modules is printer-friendly and can be used as reading material.  Click here for a clickable outline of the topics covered in the Lower Cape Fear River Basin module.  High school environmental science teachers could use the NC Coastal Explorers modules as an introduction to management issues related to North Carolina's coastal ecosystems.

The Lower Cape Fear River Basin module is interdisciplinary in nature and touches on the geography, geology, hydrology, ecology, and human history of southeastern North Carolina.  It correlates well with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Standard Course of Study Science Objectives for grades 5, 6, and 8, and with the Social Science Objectives for grades 4 and 8.   It also correlates with many of the Science Objectives for High School Earth/Environmental Science.

The entire Lower Cape Fear River Basin module correlates well with the National Geography Standards for grades K-12 from the National Geographic Society and with the grades 5-8 Life Science and Earth and Space Science objectives of the National Science Education Content Standards.  The content of the module also relates to the National Social Studies Standards for early and middle grades as defined by the National Council for Social Studies.
