Water moves very slowly through swamp forests like
this one along the Northeast Cape Fear River. |

Lizard's Tail is
found in drier swamp forests. It has a
stalk of flowers that looks like - what else
- a lizard's tail! |

Swamp forests form in the lower
parts of rivers.
Here the land is very flat and flooded much of the year.
Some of the trees that grow in swamp forests are Bald Cypress (Taxodium
distichum), Swamp Tupelo (Nyssa biflora),
and Red Maple (Acer rubrum). Very few plants grow
on the ground. The shade from the trees and the deep water
make it hard for grasses and other plants to survive.
Plants that can live on the ground in some swamps are Lizard's Tail (Saururus
cernus), Giant Sedge (Carex gigantea), and Netted chain
fern (Woodwardia areolata).
